Amrap has launched a new Australian music blog Amrap Discovered to showcase emerging and established artists to the public.
Amrap Discovered features videos and artist biographies from the most popular Australian music artists on community radio’s music catalogue – AirIt. A weekly chart will be blogged listing the tracks that have been most ordered by the 150 stations and 700 broadcasters who source music from AirIt for airplay.
Amrap Discovered also showcases AirIt releases recommended by the music departments of leading community radio stations, providing further motivation for Labels and Unsigned Artists to apply for the free AirIt service.
“Since AirIt went live in October over 10,000 tracks from over 1000 Artists have been ordered for airplay by community radio stations” said Amrap Manager, Chris Johnson.
“The Amrap Discovered blog is a unique online Australian music space where the public can discover great Australian music as it gains traction on community radio.”
In a unique twist Amrap Discovered showcases artist videos rather than audio tracks, with links to share the videos through social networks and purchase the music through the Artist or Labels’ preferred retailer.
Johnson explains “Amrap’s job is to get broadcast quality tracks from unsigned Artists and Labels to radio for airplay and we go to great lengths to protect those tracks from unauthorised public internet access. Amrap Discovered showcases other unique content that Artists make available online and we’ll make it easy for the public to find this content, disseminate it throughout their social networks and buy the tracks”.
Artists posted on Amrap Discovered receive coverage on Amrap’s entire online social network via Amrap’s existing twitter feed and brand new Myspace and Facebook pages.
“Community radio is constantly exploring the Australian music scene and breaking new music so we’re confident Amrap Discovered will become a unique online melting pot of Australian music discoveries”, Johnson said.

Amrap has launched a satirical online radio station to poke fun at Commercial Radio Australia’s (CRA) successful - and unpopular - bid to eliminate Australian music quotas from commercial digital radio stations.
Amrap has launched ‘Midnight Gaga Radio’ as part of its new Australian Music Blog Amrap Discovered (www.amrap.org/blog). Midnight Gaga Radio broadcasts a ‘mash up’ of Midnight Oil’s 1980s commercial radio hit with Lady Gaga's song ‘Poker Face’. The track is performed live by Amrap staff on an '80s Casio keyboard.
Midnight Gaga Radio highlights the inconsistency in the Australian Communications and Media Authority’s (ACMA) recent statement that removing Australian music quotas enables commercial radio to “experiment with programming formats, including the programming of niche services such as ‘event channels’ like Pink Radio and Radio Gaga.”
“Amrap works with community radio stations to generate airplay opportunities for Australian music artists,” explained Amrap Manager, Chris Johnson. “As such, we are compelled to express our concern over this recent move by the commercial radio sector to evade their regulatory responsibility to support Australian music on the digital radio platform.”
“Do ACMA and CRA seriously believe that devoting a radio station to advertise a single American pop star is a legitimate and innovative use of Australia’s radio spectrum? If so, Midnight Gaga Radio might just be a winner. In the meantime, Amrap will continue its important work of promoting radio airplay for Australian musicians around the country,” Johnson said.

The Australia Council for the Arts is giving 10 Australian bands the opportunity to take their music across the oceans through its International Pathways initiative, assisting contemporary musicians with the cost of touring internationally.
Bands receiving support include Empire of the Sun, Cloud Control, Tripod, Jeffery Lang, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, The Middle East, 50 Lions, The Fumes, Midnight Juggernauts and The Little Stevies.
‘For ten years International Pathways funding has been providing support to Australian musicians to make their mark overseas’, says Paul Mason, Director of Music at the Australia Council for the Arts.
‘It’s a really important initiative when you consider the distance, airfares and logistical challenges of touring the world. Our funding makes sure the international market is aware of the new and emerging sounds coming from our shores’.
Blue Mountains based Cloud Control will tour the UK in July for a five date showcase. Following their ‘album of the week’ achievements on Triple J, Triple R and FBi Radio, and impressive reviews for their debut album, Cloud Control hope to capitalise on the success of their Great Escape performance in 2009 and secure a UK and European release for their album.
Hypnotic acoustic band, The Middle East, are touring the UK and Europe for an 18 date showcase including Germany, France, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Belgium and Holland. With the support of International Pathways, the first European tour for the band includes appearances at the world renowned Glastonbury and T in the Park festivals.

Songwriters who want to take their career to the next level are urged to enter the WAM Song of the Year 2010.
Now in its 21st year, the WAM Song of the Year offers its Grand Prize winner $5,000 cash, a 3 day recording session supplied by Poons Head Recording Studio, a mastering session with James Hewgill Music and the pressing of 500 CDs by Diskbank.
Unpublished songwriters can enter their compositions in 10 genre categories, 2 special categories and 2 school age categories, all with prizes of $500 plus one day of recording time in a professional recording studio.
This year returns with the "Mentally Healthy" category, where songwriters are encouraged to share songs which deal with positive messages relating to mental health. The special "Love" category also returns this year after a two year hiatus. Outstanding Regional and Indigenous songwriters will once again be honoured in bonus categories.

Music NT is calling upon anyone working in the NATIONAL music industry to participate in the nomination process for the 2010 IMAs. Every nomination is important to the future of the Indigenous music scene and nominations close on 16 July.
The Indigenous Music Awards bring together local acts that have yet to make their mark on the world, alongside top Territorians who have achieved international acclaim – all in the presence of key industry professionals and national media. These awards continue to surprise with the breadth and depth of talent.
Now in its 7th year, the IMAs pave the way for new recording, touring and promotional opportunities for a number of NT artists, playing a significant role in the development of careers for Indigenous artists.
The awards will take place on Saturday 28 August at the Darwin Amphitheatre, George Brown Botanical Gardens, Darwin, Northern Territory.
